GMC Football: Sayreville rebounds from two heartbreaking losses with big win

After dropping two heartbreakers in a row, the Sayreville High School football team bounced back, returning to its winning ways with a convincing 47-7 victory over Monroe on Friday night.

The Bombers, who squandered fourth-quarter leads to Piscataway and Shore Conference power Brick Memorial in consecutive weeks, raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead.

Sayreville improved to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in the Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division to create a three-way tie atop the division with Piscataway and South Brunswick.

The Vikings rolled to a victory over East Brunswick and Piscataway endured a 24-20 loss to Old Bridge on Friday night.

South Brunswick and Sayreville will meet next weekend in a key division matchup.

Sayreville quarterback Mark Whitford completed 7 of 10 passes for 80 yards including a 10-yard scoring strike to Jacari Carter.

Connor Holmes was the Bombers’ leading rusher. He carried eight times for 119 yards. Holmes scored on runs of 53 and 33 yards.

Zuriel Wright also contributed a pair of rushing touchdowns to the win. He scored from 29 and 3 yards out.

Savon Kirksey had a 3-yard touchdown jaunt and Griffin Anthony had a 1-yard scoring plunge for Sayreville.

Tristan Behr anchored the Bombers’ defense with 10 tackles, two sacks and a hit for a loss.

Monroe trailed 41-0 before it got on the scoreboard.

The Falcons, who have been limited to four touchdowns over the last three games, fell to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the division.

Sayreville scored two first-quarter touchdowns and added two more scores in the second quarter.

Monroe travels to Piscataway next weekend.
