FOOTBALL RANKINGS: Courier News/Mid-State 37 Top 10, through Week 2

Courier News and Home News Tribune

1. Westfield (2-0) – Last week’s rank No. 1 – The Blue Devils winning streak moved to 27 straight after Friday night’s super-impressive 23-7 victory at Ridge. Sophomore back Tim Alliegro, getting his first varsity start, played hero for the resurgent Westfield offense, which struggled in a 12-7 opening-day edging of Linden. Alliegro led the way Friday night, gaining 208 yards on 42 attempts and a touchdown, earning a Player of the Week nomination.

2. Bridgewater-Raritan (2-0) – Last week No. 2 – The Panthers got clutch plays on defense and a breakout performance from its offense in a wild 31-30 victory over Hillsborough on Friday night. Bridgewater-Raritan overcame four turnovers and a ton of penalties, surviving a 2-point conversion try in the final minutes to earn its 24th straight regular-season victory.

3. Hillsborough (1-1) – Last week No. 4 – The Raiders came within a 2-point conversion attempt with just under 2:00 left from pulling off the upset on the road at Bridgewater-Raritan on Friday night, surviving way too many turnovers, ill-timed penalties and injuries to be in the game until the final seconds. Hillsborough will look to get back on track Saturday against Plainfield.

4. Ridge (1-1) – Last week No. 3 – The Red Devils couldn’t capitalize on the momentum of an opening-night victory by becoming Westfield’s 27th straight victim last weekend, falling 23-7 at home. Ridge will play host to Linden on Friday night looking to get back into the win column.

5. North Hunterdon (2-0) – Last week No. 5 – The Lions got a huge boost after sneaking past defending Raritan Division champ Summit in their opener and had no trouble with Warren Hills on Friday night, scoring a 31-13 victory. Quarterback Matt Busher added a passing and rushing touchdown to the three he tallied last week.

6. Hunterdon Central (0-2) – Last week No. 6 – The Red Devils came within two points of topping Phillipsburg on the road Friday night, but fell 14-12 when the 2-point conversion attempt that would have tied it in the final minute failed.

7. Somerville (2-0) – Last week No. 7 – The Pioneers continued to roll, putting up some more gaudy offensive numbers in a 54-25 blasting of North Plainfield. First-year starting quarterback Ryan Kovacs led the way, throwing for 228 yards and four touchdowns.

8. Immaculata (1-1) – Last week No. 8 – The Spartans were victimized by a missed extra point in the first half, falling to Summit 14-13 after a scoreless game after intermission. Immaculata faces winless Scotch Plains-Fanwood this weekend.

9. Voorhees (2-0) – Last week No. 10 – The Vikings not only scored an impressive victory over perennial Group III power Cranford on Friday night, they did it in dominating fashion, blanking the Cougars 35-0 behind a five-touchdown performance from Player of the Week nominee George Eberle. Huge test coming for Voorhees on Friday night at defending Mountain Division champion Somerville.

10. Delaware Valley (1-1) – Last week No. 9 – The Terriers were outscored by Roselle 28-21 on Friday night, and though disappointing, it’s certainly an improvement over last year’s 45-6 result against the Rams.
