Unlike its season opener, when the Old Bridge High School football team struggled to get its running game in gear, the Knights rolled up 351 yards on the ground in an impressive 37-0 victory over Monroe on Friday night.

Quarterback Anthony Imbimbo led all rushers with 188 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. He scored on runs of 5, 7 and 8 yards while staking the Knights to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Trevor Haughney, who was the offensive star of a 35-6 season-opening loss to South Brunswick, against which he rushed for 109 yards, registered a game-changing defensive play with 1:17 left in the second quarter. His 26-yard fumble return for a touchdown generated a 27-0 lead.

Trevor Schwartz, who saw action behind center for the second consecutive week, closed out the scoring on a 22-yard run with 4:12 left in the game.

Calogero Caruso contributed a 24-yard field goal and four extra points to the victory, which came before another packed house including a boisterous student section, as well as youth football players and cheerleaders from the township.

Monroe (0-2) was out-gained 381 to 109 in total yards from scrimmage and converted just 2 of 13 third-down attempts.

Quarterback Fritz Frage completed 9-of-20 passes for 59 yards and was intercepted twice. Running back Kaylon Bradley finished with 38 yards on 15 carries.

Schwartz (three carries for 52 yards) and Haughney (seven carries for 45 yards) were Old Bridge’s other leading ground gainers.

Imbimbo, who attempted just one pass last week, was 1-of-4 passing including a 30-yard completion to Manny Wheager.

Old Bridge received a complete team effort on defense as two dozen players recorded at least a solo tackle or an assist. Zach Thomas and Wheager each intercepted a pass.
Ryan van de Sande and Corey Thompson had six tackles apiece for Monroe and each had a fumble recovery. Old Bridge committed three turnovers.

The Knights (1-1) did not attempt a single punt. The Falcons punted six times.
