The Edison High School football team rebounded from an abysmal first half to rally for a 28-16 comeback victory over Monroe on Friday night.

The Eagles committed four turnovers, yielded a 70-yard touchdown pass, had a 31-yard scoring run of their own nullified via penalty and snapped the ball over their punter’s head deep in their own territory.

On the latter play, Edison’s defense held, enabling the Eagles to limit Monroe to a field goal as the Falcons took a 10-0 lead into the intermission.

Edison scored the next 28 points (including three third-quarter touchdowns) before Monroe closed out the scoring with three minutes remaining to produce the final margin.

Donovan Benoit, a transfer from Virginia, rushed 15 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on runs of 2 and 7 yards.

Armani Bell carried five times for 58 yards including a 13-yard scoring jaunt. Dimitrius Grant also found paydirt, scoring on a 3-yard plunge.

“After a terrible first half our team showed a lot of heart coming back,” Edison head coach Matt Fulham said. “We made plays when we needed to.”

Rookie quarterback Dean Escobar efficiently ran Edison’s offense. He had five carries for 15 yards and completed 3 of 5 passes for 26 yards.

Edison’s offensive line took the game over in the second half.
