Softball: South Plainfield earns No. 1 seed in GMC Tournament

The South Plainfield High School softball team was named the No. 1 seed in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament on Monday.

The Tigers (17-1) advanced to the final last season as the top seed, but fell to South Brunswick 6-4 in 11 innings. It was South Brunswick's first GMC Tournament title and first appearance in the final.

The Vikings (12-1) were named the No. 2 seed, Sayreville (13-3) is the third seed, Monroe (8-8) was given the fourth seed and J.P. Stevens (10-4) is the fifth seed. Old Bridge (11-5), Carteret (15-3) and South River (17-1) round out the top eight, which all received byes into the first round.

The play-in round is scheduled for Tuesday and the preliminary around is set for Thursday. The first round is scheduled for Saturday and the quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday, May 17. The semifinals will be Saturday, May 20 at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Middlesex County College. The final is slated for Friday, May 26 at 4:30 p.m. at Middlesex County College.
