Wardlaw-Hartridge 7, South Amboy 6: Sandy Miller, battling back from an 0-2 count, delivered a clutch two-run single in the top of the seventh to erase a 6-5 deficit and lift the Rams (2-2) to an impressive victory over the defending Gold Division champions.

After winning pitcher J.J. Stueck, who entered in relief with two away in the sixth, fanned the first two batters he faced in the seventh – who happened to be South Amboy’s No. 2 and No. 3 hitters – Ryan Petela sealed the victory with a spectacular game-ending catch.

Wardlaw-Hartridge rallied for three runs in the top of the second to erase a 2-0 deficit. Stueck led off the inning with a double. Tim McDonald fought off a 2-2 pitch and doubled down the left-field line. Freshman Joe Walker legged a sacrifice bunt into an infield hit. Miller, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, capped the rally.

South Amboy responded with three runs in the third to take a 5-3 lead. The resilient Rams scored twice in the fifth to forge a 5-5 tie. Ovidio Chavez, who returned from a hamstring injury, led off the frame with a single. AJ Massaro, another freshman, followed with a single. An outfield error on the play allowed Chavez to score.

South Amboy scored in the home sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Zach Honimar went 3-for-4 for the Governors, while teammate Jordan Ortiz went 2-for-4.

Starting pitcher Kyle Gasiewski, who impressed opposing coaches in starts against Woodbridge this year and Colonia last year, allowed three earned runs over five and a third innings for South Amboy. He fanned 13 and walked one while allowing nine hits, more than he surrendered to Woodbridge and Colonia in the aforementioned outings.

McDonald finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI. South Amboy was outhit 11-6. Chavez recorded seven putouts.

Timothy Christian 8, Piscataway Tech 2: Despite being outhit 6-5, the Tigers (1-4) snapped a four-game losing streak.

Matt Spiess went 2-for-5 for Timothy Christian, which scored all the runs it needed (three) in the first inning. The Tigers scored one run in five of the next six frames to steadily build upon their lead.

Josiah DeSantos, Jeff Sampson and Liam Paige each contributed a hit to the victory.

Winning pitcher Daniel Lai fanned six, allowed five hits and did not issue a walk. He went the distance, allowing two earned runs.

Old Bridge 5, Perth Amboy 1: Rob D’Acunto went 2-for-3 to back the three-hit pitching of Jake Kodros as the Knights won their second straight.

Kodros went the distance, fanning 10 and walking one. Perth Amboy’s lone run came on Chris Brito’s solo blast. Brito finished 2-for-3 with a double and that round-tripper.

Losing pitcher Jose Peralta allowed five runs (only two of which were earned) over three innings. He yielded five hits, walked three and fanned two.

South Plainfield 4, Colonia 0: Winning pitcher Jean Sapini fanned eight and allowed three hits in a complete-game shutout.

The Tigers scored all their runs in the home first. Sapini and Mike Marrero each had an RBI single. After two runners were forced out at home, South Plainfield scored on a throwing error. The Tigers’ second run crossed on a wild pitch.

Mike Stanczak singled and doubled for South Plainfield (3-0), while teammate Billy Keane went 2-for-3.

Hard-luck loser Nick Nielson went the distance. He allowed seven hits, fanned one and walk none.

The Patriots left seven on base and did not advance a runner past second.

Nick Michael, Frank Lehmann and Anthony Palmisano had Colonia’s hits.

East Brunswick Tech 6, Dunellen 0: Vincent Pellicane hurled a complete-game shutout, fanning seven and scattering five hits while recording his second victory on the mound.

Pellicane went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to help his own cause. Rookie Garrett Allo continued his hot streak going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Garrett was intentionally walked in the sixth, loading the bases for Dylan Johnson, who delivered a tide-turning three-run double to the wall. Johnson’s clutch hit produced the final margin.

AJ Rambone contributed two hits and two runs scored to the victory.

Ryan Kerwin and Joe Olsommer combined for four of Dunellen’s five hits with two hits apiece.

East Brunswick 5, J.P. Stevens 1: Ryan Flynn (2-for-4) and Mike Falco (2-for-3) had multiple-hit games to pace the Bears to a Red Division victory.

Falco also earned the win on the mound. He struck out nine, scattered three hits and walked two in a complete-game effort. David Bermudez, Brad Edwards, Mat Nelson and Flynn each had an RBI.

East Brunswick (3-1) scored twice in the first and added single runs in the third and fifth. The Hawks (1-2) scored their lone run in the third.

J.P. Stevens stranded five runners.

Sayreville 10, North Brunswick 3: Drew Zimmerman belted a grand slam, while teammates Kyle Richards and Jayson DeMild also homered as the Bombers (2-1) used the long ball to snap a two-game skid.

Zimmerman’s grand slam fueled a seven-run rally in the top of the seventh inning. Sayreville scored its other three runs in the opening frame.

Kyle Richards (2-for-5 with a double and two runs) was the lone Bomber with a multiple-hit game. Ryan Casano singled and scored twice, while Sayreville teammates Brian Cuadra and Bryan Fernandez each had a hit and scored a run.

Winning pitcher Kyle Lewis allowed three earned run on seven hits. He fanned five and walked two before yielding to reliever Cameron Carey with one away in the seventh. Lewis threw 98 pitches.

Andrew Tan went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI for North Brunswick, while teammate Christian Petrillo (1-for-4) plated the Raiders’ other run.

Damian Ortiz went 3-for-3 with a run scored for the Raiders, who dropped their fifth straight.

Eric Vasquez, who pitched well for six and a third innings, endured the loss.

Highland Park 9, Roselle Park 8: After rallying for seven runs in the top of the first, the undefeated Owls hung on for their third victory.

Aiden Weinstein’s sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth snapped an 8-8 deadlock. Marcello Herzog led off the inning with a single. Ryan O’Shea drew a walk and Dylan Powell advanced both runners with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt.

Powell earned the win on the mound with two scoreless innings of relief.

Evan Lanaris fueled Highland Park's first-inning outburst with a two-run single. Ian DeViarte, Jonah Rosen, Liam Roth, O’Shea and Herzog each had an RBI for the Owls.

Roselle Park (2-1) was outhit 9-7. Each team committed two errors

South Brunswick  4, Edison 1: Senior right-hander Troy Sweeney hurled a complete-game two-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks for the victory.

Chris James went 2-for-4 with an RBI for South Brunswick (4-1), while teammate Alex Pollock also plated a run.

Mike Barbato spoiled Sweeney’s shutout bid with a solo homer in the seventh inning.

Losing pitcher Chris Biolsi also went the distance, fanning six, scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs.

Jason Smith was the only other Eagle with a hit. Edison (1-3) dropped its third straight.

Piscataway 4, J.F. Kennedy 2: The Chiefs scored what proved to be two much-needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh to build a 4-0 lead as the Mustangs scored twice in the bottom of the frame to produce the final margin.

The top half of Piscataway’s batting order – including Ro Morris, John Swier, Justin Mckeown, Chris Corvil – and pinch hitter Lucas Santana accounted for all of the Chiefs’ base hits with one hit apiece.

Morris doubled and scored two runs. He also walked twice and had an RBI. Swier and Corvil plated one run apiece. Parris Washington and Nick Bucci each scored for Piscataway.

Winning pitcher Jason Mahmood, who was only the losing end of a 1-0 decision to Rutgers University signee Harry Rutkowski in Piscataway’s season opener, went the distance again. He fanned seven, allowed six hits and did not walk a batter to help the Chiefs complete a season sweep of J.F. Kennedy.

Jake Heyer and Zach Schneider each had an RBI for the Mustangs. Teammate Matt Godlewski went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Losing pitcher Jordy Mora hurled six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits.
