Heading into Sunday's NJSIAA Meet of Champions, Franklin's Mario Heslop had lofty goals.

Heslop was planning on running in the 55, 200 and 400 meter dashes, and was eyeing running in the 4x400 meter relay.

"As an athlete I think I’m very competitive, I told my coach I was going to do all the races, including the 4x400 and he was like, 'No you can’t do all of them,'" Heslop said with a laugh.

Heslop started his day by winning the 400 meter dash in a N.J. No. 1 time of 1:48.71, then won the gold in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.75. In the 55 meter hurdles, Heslop finished second in 6.45.

"My expectations were to go there and execute my plan, my plan was to get all three golds in my events, but it didn’t happen because it was so fast," Heslop said. "So I got two golds and one silver because of my other races, that was my plan, but I’m still proud of myself even though I didn’t accomplish it."

After running in the 200 and 400, Heslop was fatigued, which played a role in his second place finish in the 55 meters, and put a stop to him running in the 4x400.

"I didn’t get to the 4x400 because it was race by race by race," Heslop said. "But I feel like I’m competitive and a hard worker."

That competitive drive is now focused on the New Balance Nationals, which will take place in two weeks at the New York Armory. Last week at the Eastern States Championships, Heslop ran a U.S. No. 1 time in the 55 meter dash in 6.26, and followed it up with a first place finish in the 200 meter dash. His time of 21.09 was a new state and meet record and the U.S. No. 4 time.

"It definitely helps because I know I have a lot of practice between now and New Balance, and my coach just said go out and run our hardest and put in the work," Heslop said. "(The MOC) really helped me as practice so it should help me between now and New Balance to accomplish what I want, which is to lower my times, I want to go lower on my PRs and do excellent."

In the shot put, C.J. Licata  of Gill St. Bernard's won gold with a throw of 62-7.75, which was the first gold medal for the Knights in 13 years.

North Hunterdon's Dillon Adamy, Ray Sellaro, Gavin Richards and Andrew Trapp combined to take second in the 4x800 meter relay in 7:59.05.

Nadale Buntin of J.P. Stevens was second in the 400 meter dash in 48.98, and Voorhees' Chris Romero won silver in the 1600 meter run in 4:14.24.

Hunterdon Central's David Bausmith took second in the pole vault, clearing 15-feet.
