Edison 1, South Brunswick 0: Winning pitcher Jason Smith made the most of his first career varsity start, allowing one walk, two hits and striking out three while going the distance as the Eagles upset the Vikings, ranked No. 5 in the Home News Tribune Top 10.

The Eagles scored the game’s lone run in the top of the seventh. Mike Barbato reached on a one-out infield error before Christian Biolsi spoiled Marcus James’ no-hitter with a hit-and-run single through the vacated shortstop side of the infield. Barbato advanced to third on the play. He scored on a wild pitch that bounded just eight feet away from the catcher. Barbato made an excellent read to cross home in time.

Smith used just two pitches – a fastball and changeup – to keep the Vikings, who entered the contest averaging 7.8 runs per game, off balance. Smith often got his initial offering over for a strike.

“We noticed the box scores of the other games, but after playing them yesterday (falling 4-1), we thought we saw a few things that we might be able to take advantage of,” Edison head coach Vin Abene said. “Jason is a completely different pitcher (that Monday’s starter), a lefty whose ball tails away. If he’s getting the fastball over, the changeup keeps you off balance.”

Marco DiIusto and Alex Pollock each singled for South Brunswick (4-2), which was shut out for only the second time in its last 35 games.

Smith struck out three and walked one. James fanned five and walked two.

Edison snapped a three-game losing streak.
