Bound Brook 51, Somerville 39:

SOMERVILLE -- Junior Cortlyn Morris tallied 17 points and sophomore Cameron Ward added 13 points and five rebounds as sixth-ranked Bound Brook scored a key Somerset County victory on the road Tuesday, 51-39 over Somerville.

Julia Nilsen added seven points and Jordan Todaro chipped in five points and six rebounds for the Crusaders (17-1), who hope to secure a Top 4 seeded at Monday’s Somerset County Tournament seeding meeting. Bound Brook’s lone loss came to Morris Catholic on Dec. 28.

This is the first time Bound Brook’s senior class has beaten Somerville, after their Somerset-County neighbors secured victories over the Crusaders in each of the past three seasons.

“Being so close to each other you develop that rivalry, and in my team here we’ve always fallen a little bit short,” said Morris, whose team fell to Somerville 50-48 in last season’s meeting, a loss that snapped Bound Brook’s 17-game winning streak to start the year. “So this definitely feels good for us, and it also proves that we’re not just beating lower teams, we can compete (against bigger schools). So it does give us credit that most people often don’t give us. So that feels good.”

“It’s a big win (for county seeding), plus the girls like to have bragging rights, because they’re friends with some of their girls, too,” said fourth-year Bound Brook head coach Jen Derevjanik. “Every win gives you a little more confidence.”

Kelsey Mehan tallied 12 points and five rebounds and Meghan Douglas tallied six points and seven boards for eighth-ranked Somerville (16-5).
