East Brunswick High School senior quarterback James Schuld sees Friday night's 35-12 victory over Edison as a turning point for the season that increases the Bears' chances of qualifying for the playoffs.

“We picked up our first win against Marlboro two weeks ago, had a tough loss against South Brunswick last Friday and I think tonight’s win will springboard us into next week against Freehold Township,” Schuld said.

After Edison took a 6-0 lead early on, a touchdown by Schuld and an extra point by Joshua Safeer in the last two minutes of the first quarter gave East Brunswick a lead that it maintained for the rest of the game.

“Our physicality was stronger than it was in most of our other games,” Schuld said. “We were able to upfront defensively and we were able to push the ball down the field offensively as well.”

Edison managed to get past East Brunswick’s defense to score a touchdown with just two seconds remaining in the first half, but couldn’t score a single point for the rest of the game.

East Brunswick head coach Bob Molarz sees the Bears' 28-14 victory over Marlboro on October 6 as their turning point, and hopes that this week’s success will give them a shot at the playoffs. Prior to October 6, East Brunswick started the season with three consecutive losses.

“A couple of weeks ago we had our first win and it was something we really needed so that we could believe in ourselves,” Schuld said. “We had a really good week of practice this week and we came out tonight to win.”

In order to qualify for the playoffs, East Brunswick will have to beat its next two opponents – Freehold Township and New Brunswick.

“We have to go 2-0 and we know that,” Molarz said. “It’s going to be an uphill battle. We put ourselves in this position, but I like my players, I like their attitude and I like our chances.”
