Staff Report

Perth Amboy — In the longest running Thanksgiving Day game in Middlesex County, the Carteret High School football team took out a month of offensive frustration scoring 29 first half points on the way to a 36-7 win over Perth Amboy.

Carteret took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards for a score. The drive was capped by a Angelo Golino 22-yard pass to Jalen Harris. James Hart would kick the first of his four extra points for a quick 7-0 lead. For the game Golino would throw for 224 yards. Perth Amboy quickly answered with a short pass and long run when Jeremiah Stevens took a lateral and split the Rambler defense for a 57-yard touchdown.

Carteret would not be deterred as it began to run the ball with Quartius Byrd. Byrd would ramble for a career high 158 yards, pushing his season total to over 1,000 yards. He would cap the drive with a 2-yard run. Jarrod Tasnady would take the two-point conversion run to extend the lead to 15-7. The ensuing drive for Perth Amboy would end in disaster when David Spencer broke through and blocked a punt and Michael Bennett fell on the ball for a touchdown.

Byrd would cap the first half scoring with a 13-yard run and the Ramblers hit the break with a 29-7 lead. The second half would see the offenses slow down but on the final play of the third quarter Anthony Golino took a reverse 30 yards for a score to shape the final score.

Stevens would be named the game MVP for Perth Amboy while Golino took home the award for the visitors.
