Colonia football rolls past South Plainfield as Pero rushes for career-high 207 yards

Luke Pero rushed for a career-high 207 yards and Tyler Layton passed for 140 yards as the young and steadily improving Colonia High School football team rolled to a 28-20 victory over South Plainfield on Friday night.

Layton completed 11 of 19 passes including a 31-yard scoring strike to Tristan Weathers. Pero carried 27 times and scored on a 3-yard run. Layton also scored on a 1-yard keeper.

Jordan Gutierrez returned an interception 34 yards for a score to help the Patriots improve to (2-4). The loss was the second straight for the Tigers (4-2), who trailed 14-7 at the half and never trimmed the deficit below seven points.

Matt Iodice 11 paced Colonia’s defense with 11 tackles and a forced fumble. Weathers caught five passes for 85 yards.
