Woodbridge football pitches shutout with strong defense and balanced offense

Keshaun Henry scored three touchdowns and threw for another as the Woodbridge High School football team shut out Perth Amboy for the second consecutive season, handing the Panthers a 35-0 setback on Friday night.

Henry connected with Messiah Daniels on a two-yard bubble screen for a touchdown. He also caught two scoring strikes from quarterback Donovan Tabon. Henry further highlighted his night with a scoring run.

Da’Avian Ellinton had a 55-yard touchdown run for Woodbridge, which improved to 3-4 and appears to be in excellent position to clinch a North 2 Group IV playoff berth with a win again J.P. Stevens in its next game.

Tabon’s two touchdown passes helped the Barrons build a 15-0 lead with 11:50 left in the second quarter. Daniels’ touchdown reception gave Woodbridge a 22-0 advantage with 7:12 left in the opening half. Henry’s touchdown run with 10;18 remaining in the third quarter pushed the lead to 28-0.

“We had a great game plan going into the game,” Woodbridge head coach Kevin Coleman said about his team’s defensive scheme against Perth Amboy. “They were definitely prepared for our blitzes. We are a pressure team. They had a lot of two-back sets (employing an additional blocker) to try to stop us. When (Perth Amboy) changed (after falling behind), we started to blitz more.”

Coleman said the Barrons “had a good groove” offensively. Woodbridge ran some counters, some jet sweeps and stretched the defense with the passing game.

“We kept them honest,” he said. “We were moving the ball. Hopefully, it carries over to next week.”
