EAST BRUNSWICK

Outlook: The Bears graduated 11 seniors that were the backbone of last year's squad. This year's team will be the youngest and most inexperienced in recent memory, with six juniors and as many as seven sophomores expected to contribute. The defense will be led by junior goalie Lucas Espada, who emerged as one of the best goalies in the conference last season, and junior Zach Desrosier will anchor the back line with sophomore Sean Joo. Senior Sahil Patel scored several big goals last season and will look to ignite the attack along with senior Samweal Mahrous and newcomers Gorkem Yurekli and Sanket Jain. East Brunswick expects to be a contender when tournament times arrives in late October.

Outlook: The expectations and goals remain the same yearly as a program, to win a conference and sectional title. To achieve these goals this season, Monroe will need to put focus on being better today than it was yesterday. The Falcons have to overcome a lack of depth by staying healthy and developing the younger players so they will be prepared to compete for a championship by season's end.

NEW BRUNSWICK

Coach: Rafael Castillo, second season

Last year's record: 20-2, GMC Tournament semifinalist, Central Group IV semifinalist.

Outlook: The Zebras will look to build on the success from last season as they make the jump into a very competitive GMC Red Division. The team will look to returning players Kevin Ortiz and Evaristo Solano to continue working hard to be competitive in the hunt for the division, conference and state titles. With the addition of William Rojas, who returns from the Red Bulls Academy, New Brunswick hopes to be strong and replicate some of the success of last year's squad.

OLD BRIDGE

Coach: Christopher McGrath, 10th season

Outlook: Coach McGrath is quietly optimistic about this group, as the team boasts 17 seniors who gained valuable experience last season, and it's the strongest senior class in recent memory. The senior group, led by captain Sual Downes, will help foster the team spirit, which hopes to translate onto the field.

PISCATAWAY

Coach: David Hilgert, 12th season

Last year's record: 3-15-1

Top letterwinners lost: Victor Bonilla.

Returners: Alex Kuchnicki, Ahmed Khalil.

Outlook: This year the Chiefs have received great leadership from Alex Kuchnicki and Ahmed Khalil. The pair has the team focused and prepared to do what is necessary to improve. With a much older and experienced group, the team knows that individual talent does not guarantee success and will be looking to improve on last year's win total. Overall, the goal is to get back to the state tournament.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK

Coach: Chris Hayston, 14th season

Outlook: The expectations will always be high as the Vikings have reached three of the last four county finals. While the team lost nine starters, the support players received plenty of experience last year and the team will rely on that as well as the two returning starters, Sergio Caballero and Kevin Nunez, to lead them to another successful season. South Brunswick has a strong crop of sophomores that will play a significant role and while the team may take some lumps early, the Vikings will hope to compete for a championship at the end of the season.

ST. JOSEPH

Coach: Brian Jenkins, fourth season

Outlook: Owen Donnelly has been with the team since his sophomore year, and goalie Gurjivan Kalkat has played varsity since he was a freshman, but injuries have been an issue. The Falcons have a strong midfield, but there are questions and inexperience in the back. A strong junior class includes projected starters Matt Pinho, Dan DiSarro and Ryan Brede will be key players. St. Joseph will also be expecting contributions from Matt Cruz, Tyler Costeira and Matt Nunziata.

WHITE DIVISION

COLONIA

Coach: Mike Kizoulis, 12th season

EDISON

Outlook: The Eagles are an experienced team with many players moving up from JV or into high school, so the team is looking to improve throughout the season with the experience to make a run during tournament time.

NORTH BRUNSWICK

Coach: Paul Liddy, eighth season

Outlook: The Raiders moved from the Red Division to the White Division and will have many new players from the JV and freshmen teams that have had success over the last two years. North Brunswick looks to be competitive in the division as well as the GMC. Seniors Pawel Dzielski, Sam Mikhailov, Eric Goggin and Hamza Kahn will lead the team.

SAYREVILLE

Coach: Nick Cifelli, 16th season

Outlook: The Bombers will be very young this season as they return just four varsity players, including All-White Division players Kevin Sousa and Ope Olaloko. The offense will need to carry the team early until the defense gains some experience. This team is talented and should be seasoned by the time the county and state tournaments roll around. With a roster that only has four seniors, Sayreville will rely heavily on the play of its talented sophomore and junior class.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD

Coach: Anthony Perfilio, 12th season

Last year's record: 16-7-2, GMC Tournament co-champion, North 2 Group III semifinalist.

Outlook: The Tigers lost a number of players to graduation, but there are a number of players who are fighting to fill those spots. Coach Perfilio is confident that South Plainfield will be competitive in the division and should do well in both the state and county tournaments.

WOODBRIDGE

Outlook: The Barrons will look to play with high energy, play a tough defense with a good balance throughout the team and to attack at every opportunity. Woodbridge has a good mixture of experience and younger players and the team goals will be to improve on last season and to take each game as it comes from start to finish. Mike Magera and Connor Penrod will be looked to to lead the team on the field.

BLUE DIVISION

METUCHEN

Coach: Ed Albanese, second season

Outlook: Many new faces and new positions will be a challenge for the young Bulldogs, but expectations will still be set high after last season's Blue Division title and sectional final appearance. This year's captains, Kyle Harry, Jack Bradley and Alex Brooks, will provide much of the leadership to a team that graduated a number of seniors.

MIDDLESEX

Coach: Jesse Goldberg, first season

Outlook: Coach Goldberg expects seniors Adrian Martinez, Anthony Ortiz, Robert Dinger and Joseph Moskal to be the centerpeice of the team. There are three freshmen on varsity who will be playing a huge role as the future of the program, so getting everyone on the same page and integrating them into high school soccer and used to the speed of play will be an exciting adventure. Junior Arturo Barrett scored six goals last season and will be looked to as a key player to lead the attack. Expectations and goals are to compete for the division and additionally make a strong run in the state tournament, as well as improve every day individually and as a team.

SPOTSWOOD

Coach: Jeff Marvinny, 14th season

Last year's record: 11-9

Outlook: Spotswood lost a lot to graduation, but 12 players with some varsity experience return. The team has multiple varsity starters in key positions. Last year Nick Moran scored 15 goals in seven games before an injury ended his season. Matteo Tavella and Andrew Oross are playmakers in the midfield and can score as well. Colin Barlow returns from missing most of last seaosn to anchor the backline and there is depth and competition for positions throughout the lineup. The Chargers hope to be competitive in the Blue Division and improve as the season progresses.

SOUTH RIVER

Coach: Eric Clays, 24th season

Last year's record: 14-8-2

Top letterwinners lost: Ian Sawicki, Ryan Farrell, Kevin Mendez, Jonathan Goncalves, Alex Gandarinho, Jeffrey Tencio.

Returners: M Mohamed Ayad, M Michael Pisco, F Davi Horta, D Brian Seixeiro, D Josh Santos, F Matt Pietrzyk, M Alex Oliveira.

Newcomers: Ryan Sampaio, Brandon Santos, Brandon Cappelluti, Bruce Marques.

Outlook: South River is going to utilize the same strategy as every year. This team has incredible potential and coach Clays expects to win the Central Group I title like last season. The team works together and create an unstoppable team, as their communication skills and athletic ability come together to make a great soccer team.

GOLD DIVISION

EAST BRUNSWICK TECH

Coach: Mike Buonaguro, sixth season

Outlook: A strong defense, led by All-Gold Division selections Justin Jezercak and Vincent Pellicane, will be critical if the Tigers want to win the division for the second consecutive season. Troy Bello will be the starting goalie while Austin Montgomery, Shawn Jobin and Joshua and Jonathan Dela Rosa will control the midfield. AJ Rambone and Carlos Hernandez will be the starting forwards.

​PERTH AMBOY TECH

Coach: Stephen J. Moir, 10th season

Last year's record: 1-16

Outlook: Perth Amboy Tech will look to second year captain Javiar Torres to lead a young team that is looking to improve from last year. As a very young team last year, the Patriots were able to get some players experience and they look to use that going forward this year. The two freshmen, Fernando Carabajal and Andree Carmona, will assume starting roles as the team looks to rebuild.

SOUTH AMBOY

Coach: Tony Gonsalves, 40th season

Last year's record: 8-11

Outlook: All the returning players for South Amboy are starters, so the expectation is to improve on last year's record, contend for the division title and be more competitive in the county and state tournaments.

Outlook: Woodbridge Academy will take this season one game at a time as it has the ability to beat any team in the division but it won't be easy. Scoring production is still a weakness but the defense is a strength. Modzelewski will move some players around to help with scoring. Players are versatile and can play many positions. Alijah Vanterpool will be starting in goal, taking over for All-Division goalie Kevin Lynch.

Outlook: Rutgers Prep looks to build on its 7-12 record, and with the only loss being Ezer Browne, the team looks to have a good year. Forward Jake Needleman (7g, 8a) leads the attack this year and seniors Sean Lau and Owen Chavez will bolster the defense with newcomer Matthew Foxworth.
