Region 5 quarterfinal story with all results, semifinal pairings and wrestleback pairings

Jonathan Lamprecht, who missed nearly a month of the season with a fractured hand, added insult to injury when he entered the Region 5 wrestling tournament as the seventh seed.
The senior normally would have been seeded ahead of Old Bridge standout Mike Botte, who he defeated in the regular-season, but a round robin existed in the seeding of the 126-pound weight class earlier this week due to a loss Lamprecht suffered to another wrestler Botte had defeated.
With Botte having two previous region appearances and Lamprecht never before having advanced out of the district, the former had better criteria and wound up with the second seed, setting up a quarterfinal meeting between the wrestlers on Friday night.
Lamprecht wound up being one of three wrestlers to advance to the semifinals with a victory over a second seed, scoring a 7-3 decision over Botte, who had recorded his 100th career victory in the opening round on Wednesday night.
Monroe’s Justin Hopman, who is the seventh seed at 170 pounds, and Raritan’s Justin Acevedo, who is the 10th seed at 195 pounds, join Lamprecht as the lowest-seeded wrestlers alive in the semifinals, which will be held at the Hunterdon Central Field House on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The top four seeds advanced to the semifinals in the 106, 132, 152, 220 and 285 pound weight classes.
The first-round of wrestlebacks will also commence at 10 a.m. and a long day of wrestling will conclude with the championship bouts, which are scheduled to start at approximately 4:30 p.m.
The top four finishers in each weight class from all eight of the state’s regions advance to the individual state championships in Atlantic City, which will be contested March 2-4 at Boardwalk Hall.
Hunterdon Central has the most wrestlers still alive in the tournament with a total of 10, including six who will compete in the semifinals.
A total of 18 wrestlers from Skyland Conference schools and 15 more from Greater Middlesex Conference teams will compete in the Region 5 semifinals. The leagues have a combined 66 wrestlers remaining in the Region 5 tournament.
“Throughout the season our kids have progressively gotten better,” Hunterdon Central head coach Jon Cantagallo-Rohm said. “Obviously, we ended the (dual meet) season with a loss to (undefeated) Howell, but our kids really went out and wrestled tough. It (the sectional final) came down to the last couple of matches. So, our kids are really kind of riding the wave where they have really come together as a team. I told the kids to go out and have fun, just open it up and wrestle out there.”
The Red Devils twice advanced a school-record seven wrestlers to the states, a feat Cantagallo-Rohm is hoping to at least duplicate if not surpass. Hunterdon Central advanced six wrestlers to Atlantic City last season.
“To have six guys through (to the semis) at this point is a pretty good situation to be in,” Cantagallo-Rohm said. “This has been a fun year for us and I’m proud of the way the kids have wrestled all season.”
South Brunswick similarly finished the dual meet season strong, winning six of its last seven, a turnaround in which Lamprecht was instrumental with his return to the mat. The broken hand sidelined him from Jan. 11 through Feb. 1. Since returning, Lamprecht has won 11 of his last 12 bouts with his lone loss to conference tournament finalist Michael O’Brien of Edison.
“I think the rest was good for him,” South Brunswick head coach Bobby Januska explained of Lamprecht being out with the fractured hand. “He spent a lot of time in the offseason preparing for this year. I think he put a lot of pressure on himself as our most experienced wrestler, plus he’s a captain and he just wanted to perform well. As a team, we missed having him in those matches (where Lamprecht was sidelined). But he came back at the right time to get his feet wet again, and it stoked the flames. I think he’s primed to hopefully do well tomorrow morning and hopefully make a run in Atlantic City.”
Lamprecht has a tough semifinal draw with Hillsborough’s Anthony Donnadio. The two missed one another in a season-opening quad meet when Donnadio bumped up to 132 pounds to face Mathew Castimore, the only other South Brunswick wrestler to advance to the semifinals.
Donnadio’s teammate, 182-pounder Michael Dooley, earned his 100th career win with a 6-0 quarterfinal decision over Middletown South’s Jack Hardzewicz.
South Brunswick assistant coach Nick DeMarco has invested significant time in recent weeks working one-on-one with Lamprecht, who has benefited from the training.
“(Lamprecht) is not used to getting this kind of action and this kind of hype coming out of the stands and wrestling, so I really credit Coach DeMarco for helping him along this journey,” Januska said. “He really just let it fly (against Botte in the quarterfinals). He got a couple of takedowns early and stayed aggressive, which was great. He wasn’t satisfied winning by a couple of points. He kept trying to score, which is what we teach at South Brunswick.”
Monroe advanced four wrestlers to the semifinals including Joseph Fiordaliso (106), Andy Lombard (138), Kaylon Bradley (195) and Hopman, who scored a 3-2 decision over second-seeded Shawne Ramsby of Delaware Valley, which had a rough night, going 1-4 in the quarterfinals.
“We are always confident in (Hopman),” Monroe head coach Joe Eurell said. “He’s one of our senior leaders. His style of wrestling is very unorthodox, but he’s a getter. He’s in every one of his matches. He’s frustrating to wrestle. He’s very good at finding a way to win.”
Lombard, who dropped a 5-1 decision to Pasquale Vizzoni of Hunterdon Central earlier this year, reversed the defeat with a 5-3 overtime win in the region quarterfinals. A student of the sport, Lombard has had success avenging losses, a point he established with a stunning win over defending conference tournament champion Aaron Coleman in the league tournament final last month.
