After winning gold in the 800 meter run at both the indoor and outdoor Meet of Champions last year, Governor Livingston's Victoria Vanriele was pretty confident she could do it again on Saturday.

The sophomore won the 800 at the Meet of Champions in 2:08.81, which was the U.S. #2 time and set a new meet record at the Bennett Center.

"I had won the Meet of Champions indoor and outdoor last year, so part of my season’s goals was to win this indoor season," Vanriele said. "That was kind of expected, but there was new competition so I had to work hard for that."

Vanriele lowered her time from the 2:10.27 she ran in the 800 at the sectional meet, which was a meet and venue record at the time.

Pingry's Ryan Davi was second in 2:12.91 and Roxbury's Karly Forker was third in 2:14.86.

"It was really exciting, it was a lot of pressure but being able to win meant a lot, it kind of capped off part of my season’s goals, I have another meet, the New Balance Nationals in two weeks," Vanriele said. "I’m feeling pretty good, the run (Saturday) boosted by confidence, that was an indoor best for me and I felt strong running so I’m excited for New Balance."

After the New Balance meet, Vanriele, who started running in the fifth grade after a gym teacher suggested she compete at the Colgate Women's Games, will take two weeks off before she starts training for the spring season.

"Going into outdoor I’m just going to take it fresh and refocus myself and start again, try to keep lowering my times and see how far it takes me," Vanriele said. "I love setting goals and trying to push myself and having something to look forward to, it’s motivation for myself and builds confidence not just in athletics but also academics because I know I can handle pressure, it’s a rewarding sport for me."

In the 200 meter dash, Piscataway's Shauntae Nelson won gold in 25.13. She became the first athlete from Piscataway to win at the indoor Meet of Champions.

Pingry's Nikki Vanasse won the 3200 meter run in a U.S. #5 time of 10:34.49, which beat her personal best of 11:05.78 that she set at the Non-Public A championships last week.

Union Catholic made history, winning its fourth-straight 4x400 relay in 3:56.90. Mia Bennett-Jones, Khamil Evans, Zamira Ysaac and Leena Morant became the first team in state history to win four straight 4x400 relays at the Meet of Champions, indoor or outdoor.

Woodbridge was second as Kaylah Davis, Janice Igbinobaro, Catherine Catipay and Trinity Eason finished in 3:59.52.

In the 4x800 meter relay, which was being run for only the second time at the Meet of Champs, Ridge won for the second-straight year. Olivia Cicchetti, Meghan Convery, Morgan Lyons and Kaitlyn Van Baalen finished with a time of 9:17.78.
