Boys Basketball: This week's Courier News Top 10

The Union Catholic boys basketball team defeated Scotch Plains-Fanwood 49-44 on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018.

1. Gill St. Bernard's (14-3): Gill St. Bernard's only lost one game in the month of January, to Our Savior New American (N.Y.) by two points back on Jan. 6. Since that loss the Knights have won 10 straight games and will undoubtedly be named the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Somerset County Tournament yet again. Gill St. Bernard's looked to stretch its streak to 11 against Hillsborough on Thursday night.

2. Rutgers Prep (9-5): Rutgers Prep has won its last three games against Bridgewater-Raritan, Conwell-Egan (Pa.) and Hillsborough after losing back-to-back games on Jan. 21 and 23. The Argonauts looked to extend the streak against Ridge on Thursday and TCA on Saturday.

3. Union Catholic (10-7): Union Catholic put the breaks on a three-game skid with wins over Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Westfield this past week. Robert Miller, Ibn Lynn, Justin Archer and Jaheim Tanksley have led the team this season and looked to boost the Vikings over Plainfield on Thursday.

4. Scotch Plains-Fanwood (14-2): Scotch Plains-Fanwood picked up its second loss of the season on Jan. 25 to Union Catholic, which was the first meeting in two years for the two schools. The Raiders bounced back with an overtime win against Summit and a victory over Gov. Livingston. They faced Cranford on Thursday and will host New Providence on Saturday.

5. Watchung Hills (12-5): Watchung Hills has won five in a row against Timothy Christian, North Hunterdon, Phillipsburg, Plainfield and Immaculata. The Warriors faced off against Hunterdon Central for the top spot in the Skyland Conference Raritan Division on Thursday and will host North Plainfield on Friday. 

6. Voorhees (12-2): Voorhees bounced back from a three-point loss to Bound Brook on Jan. 23 with two straight wins over Warren Hills and Delaware Valley. The Vikings had a big test against Chatham on Thursday night and will host High Point in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament second round on Saturday,

7. Bridgewater-Raritan (8-7): Bridgewater-Raritan has lost four of its last five games, with the lone win coming against Somerville on Tuesday. The Panthers looked to get back on track against Franklin on Thursday and will play Timothy Christian on Saturday.

8. North Hunterdon (9-6): North Hunterdon has won two in a row against Immaculata and Montgomery, bouncing back from back-to-back losses against Immaculata and Watchung Hills. The Lions faced Raritan Division foe Phillipsburg on Thursday and will host South Hunterdon in the H/W/S Tournament second round on Saturday.

9. Montgomery (11-6): Montgomery has gone 2-2 in its last four games, with wins over North Plainfield and Hunterdon Central and losses against Phillipsburg and North Hunterdon. The Cougars faced Raritan Division foe Immaculata on Thursday and will play Rutgers Prep on Tuesday.

10. Hunterdon Central (10-6): Hunterdon Central has gone 3-1 in its last four games, with wins over Immaculata, Toms River North in overtime and Phillipsburg. The loss came at the hands of Montgomery by one point in overtime. The Red Devils took on Raritan Division rival Watchung Hills on Thursday and will host Warren Hills in the H/W/S Tournament on Saturday.

10. Bernards (11-3): Bernards has won its last eight games, with its last loss against South Hunterdon on Jan. 9. The Mountaineers hosted Pingry on Thursday and will host Delaware Valley on Tuesday.
