Immediately after registering one of the two biggest upsets of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament finals, John Poznanski spent no time celebrating.

The sophomore from Colonia walked off the mat and into a hallway outside the gymnasium at Piscataway High School, where he sprinted back and forth across a concrete floor nearly a dozen times, sidestepping several spectators who were looking for an opportunity to congratulate him.

Poznanski was getting in some additional work, increasing his stamina after a grueling bout, because his goals are loftier than winning a conference tournament title.

“This was a good stepping stone,” Ponznanski said of his 6-4 decision over previously undefeated Michael Petite, the defending 160-pound GMCT champion from Piscataway who finished fourth in the state last season.

“The goal is to get on top of the podium in Atlantic City. I was ranked lower than him (Poznanski is eighth in the state), but that’s just on paper. The mat is the mat.”

Colonia head coach Dan Grasso put the win in perspective, expanding upon Poznanski’s own words, stating, “that’s a pretty big stepping stone,” which was a tip of the hat to Petite, who is ranked third in the state.

Poznanski’s win overshadowed several memorable moments in the finals including:

  • South Plainfield’s Joe Heilmann winning a fourth individual crown while leading the Tigers to their 10th consecutive team title
  •  Monroe’s Andy Lombard avenging a 9-0 loss to two-time conference tournament champion Aaron Coleman of J.F. Kennedy with an 8-3 decision in the 138-pound final
  • Undersized Nick Nyers of Woodbridge winning a heavyweight title
  • Middlesex's Jeff Johnson finally claiming a crown after two second-place finishes.

Heilmann was named Outstanding Wrestler for the lower weights. Poznanski was named Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights.

South Plainfield rolled to its 24th overall team championship with 239 points. Piscataway (160) placed second for the second straight year, and Monroe (159) finished third.

The host Chiefs crowned three individual champions. Elijah Pitt-Goodson opened the finals with a 5-4 decision over top-seeded Kyle Baszak of South River at 182 pounds, which fired up the home crowd. Joseph Hatcher defended his 152-pound title with an 11-5 decision over Monroe’s Nicholas Weikel. Nick Recine clinched second place for the Chiefs in the tournament’s final bout with a 7-1 decision over Carteret’s Demetrius Ruiz.

“Everyone pinned their way through the semis to get to the finals, which is great,” said Piscataway head coach Dan Smith, whose team needed every bonus point it mustered to overtake Monroe. “We always tell the guys it’s all about the team.”

Only South Plainfield, with seven finalists and four champions including Anthony White (106), Luke Niemeyer (195) and Zach DelVecchio (220), was more productive in the finals than Piscataway, which boasted five finalists.

Until Poznanski decisioned Petite, Lombard’s win over Coleman had been the bout of the tournament.

Lombard opened the match with a five-point move in which he countered Coleman, who was in on a deep sweep, with a whizzer, stepping over and grabbing an ankle while taking Coleman to his back for a near fall. The crowd gasped in reaction and the early first-period deficit was simply too much for Coleman to overcome.

“Going out I was confident I could beat him, so as soon as I hit that I knew I could win the match,” said Lombard, noting he watched film of his 9-0 loss to Coleman just two weeks ago to prepare for a rematch.

“Based on the seeds and everyone else I was the underdog, but I can’t go into a match thinking I’m going to lose,” Lombard said. “So in my eyes I wasn’t the underdog. I knew I could beat him.”

Monroe head coach Joe Eurell said Lombard wanted another shot at Coleman after losing to him earlier this year.

“He’s the type of wrestler that’s always learning,” Eurell said. “He’s always studying, always looking to get better. He's always putting in the hours. He’s the first one in (practice) and the last one to leave. He has the mentality that if he gets (an opponent to whom he lost) again, he’s going to go after it and make improvements.”

Nyers, who was yielding 74 pounds to his opponent, pinned Ramiro Osuna of New Brunswick in 2:45 to win the heavyweight title.

“That’s my go-to move,” Nyers explained of the pinning combination in which he threw the much heavier Osuna to his back. “Double and then come up with the underhook and just squeeze. Everyone told me I couldn’t do heavyweight and that’s why I wanted to do it. I just wanted to prove them wrong.”

Woodbridge’s all-time leader in tackles, Nyers is a phenomenal linebacker on the football field who parlayed his athleticism, strength and some sound coaching into become a state-placewinning caliber wrestler.

“Coach (Mike) Carbone and Coach (Joe) Liquori really made me who I am,” Nyers said. “I was always strong and athletic, but they push me hard in the room. I owe everything to them.”

Wrestling at heavyweight also allowed Nyers to avoid DelVecchio, who InterMat ranks 11th in the country at 220 pounds. DelVecchio pinned New Brusnwick’s Keshon Davila in 1:36.

Davila and Osuna became the first wrestlers in New Brunswick history to reach the conference tournament finals.

“This year,” New Brunswick head coach Ben Ostner said, “to get two (into the conference tournament finals) really shows what we are trying to do and where we are at right now. Every kid in the room is getting after it and competing. We have a great nucleus of kids. They’re tremendous kids who work their butts off.”

Perth Amboy crowned two champions with Joseph Pacheco (113) and James Rodriguez (132) winning titles.

“It’s tremendous for our program and tremendous for those two kids,” Perth Amboy head coach Rob Morales said. “They work hard and they do everything I ask of them.”

In another of the tournament’s marquee finals, Middlesex’s Jeff Johnson, who entered the tournament as a two-time runnerup, finally won a title with a 2-1 decision over South Plainfield’s Joe Sacco.

“Getting second two years in a row was pretty frustrating, so motivation was not a problem coming in, but I knew it was not going to be easy at all,” Johnson said. “Sacco is a great wrestler. He goes to the same clubs as me. The (145-pound) bracket itself was really good, so to be able to come in here and come out on top is great. I’m definitely going to use it as a way to get better and keep going strong. This is definitely a way to catapult myself toward the districts, regions and the states.”

East Brunswick’s Mitchell Polito won a second straight title with a 7-3 decision over South Plainfield’s Dave Loniewski in the 120-pound final.

White, among the underclassmen who represent the future of South Plainfield wrestling, ended the tournament with the most pins (four) in  the least amount of time (3:35) including a 42-second pin of Middlesex’s Ken Beck in the 106-pound final.

“I pinned all four kids pretty early in the first period,” said White, an undefeated freshman. “I didn’t really know what to expect (in the freshman-loaded weight class). I just wanted to go out there and win for the team, just contribute any way I can.”

Heilmann said he has tried to nurture the underclassmen, just as he was nurtured four years ago when he claimed his first conference tournament title.

“It feels like a long journey,” said Heilman, who improved his career mark to 147-12 with a pin of Edison’s Mike O’Brien. “I’m the old man on the block now. I’ve got all the underclassmen looking up to me. I like to try to set an example and instill the traditions of South Plainfield wrestling.”

South Plainfield has owned the conference tournament for years, taking over the Piscataway gym and turning the finals into a dual meet of sorts. But this year, the Chiefs gave the Tigers a run.

South Plainfield’s finalists dove head first into the circle of the mat before the start of the finals, with the seven Tigers equally dispersed and separated like petals on a flower. The five Piscataway finalists playfully joined them, filling in the gaps to form a sea of green and black before wrestlers were called for Lehigh introductions.

“Piscataway is great,” Niemeyer said following his 6-0 decision over the Chiefs’ Paris Foster. “I’ve been wrestling the Piscataway kids like Hatcher and Recine my whole life. We’ve been going to tournaments together. They are all great kids and they wrestle real well.”
