Ridge wins Kearny Holiday Wrestling Tournament and North Brunswick crowns two champions

The Ridge High School wrestling team crowned four individual champions while rolling to the championship of the Kearny Holiday Tournament on Saturday.

Devon Caputo (113) and Jake Stein each won one-point decisions for the Red Devils before teammates Chris Love (145) and Jake Hendershot (220) recorded pins in their respective finals.

Cesar Lopez (132) and Kenny Abode (182) each won individual titles for North Brunswick, which placed fifth in the 10-team field.

Ridge sat in third place before the medal round, but finished with 11 medalists, including several key pins to claim the team title.

“They went out and just absolutely responded,” Ridge coach Steve Hendershot said. “I couldn’t have been happier with the way the kids came out and wrestled for the first time this season.”

In addition to the four champions, the Red Devils also had a second-place finish, four third-place finishers and two fifth-place finishers.

"It’s a lot of fun when you go through the individual tournament, but at the end you get to take a team picture," Hendershot said. "It was a good way to start the season."
