EDISON – Myles Hartsfield is picking up exactly where he left off.

Last season, the Penn State-bound senior posted over 1,800 yards of offense with 24 touchdowns for Sayreville. Friday night, Hartsfield highlighted the statistical ledger once again with 257 yards of total offense and five touchdowns as Sayreville defeated J.P. Stevens 42-7 in the season opener Friday night.

Behind a dominant offensive line, Hartsfield had little trouble eluding tacklers on his way to three runs of 51 yards or longer.

"One thing that I am working on improving on is my conditioning," said Hartsfield, who finished with a game-high 230 yards rushing. "After a long run, I want to be out there and do another one."

After the Hawks failed to convert a fourth-and-short near midfield, Sayreville's offense immediately went to work. Linwood Crump took advantage of a key block on the left side by Dylan Thillet for a 21-yard run that put Sayreville in a first-and-goal.

The Bombers capped the five-play, 44-yard drive with Hartsfield's first score of the game – a 6-yard jaunt through the center of the Hawks' defense.

"We were happy to get the early jump on them," Sayreville coach George Najjar said. "I think our kids really fed off of that and it was important to get off to that early jump start."

Sayreville (1-0) scored touchdowns on all four of its drives to open the first half. As the game progressed, the Bombers offense and Hartsfield seemed to get even stronger.

Sayreville averaged just over three plays per series over the next three scoring drives.

Crump, who had 116 yards on the ground, added a 61-yard scoring run as Sayreville tallied 315 yards of offense in the lopsided first half.

"We couldn't have done any of this without our offensive line," said Hartsfield, who plans on attending Saturday's Penn State-Rutgers game with some family and friends.

"They were just so physical and made it easier for us."

J.P. Stevens (0-1) had just 54 yards of offense in the first half.

The Bombers defensive line of Dylan Thillet, Michael Porcaro, Anthony Porcaro, and Connor O'Brien held Hawks' sophomore running back Christopher Chukwuneke, the brother of graduated star back Chewy Chukwuneke, to 36 yards on 12 first-half carries.

The loss spoiled the coaching debut of J.P. Stevens coach Bryan Holt.

Yahsym Landerway ended the scoring drought with a 1-yard touchdown run for the Hawks, who are hoping to improve on a 4-6 campaign last season.
