More than 500 runners and walkers participated in the sixth annual Lakeview 5K in Edison’s Roosevelt Park on June 7. The top finishers were Cliff Gerber of East Brunswick (17:30) and Chloe Goldstein of Warren (20:33).

EDISON – The Lakeview 5K collected $50,000 for New Jersey Institute for Disabilities on June 7 in Roosevelt Park, the most ever for the sixth annual fundraiser, organizers said.

New Jersey Institute for Disabilities provides comprehensive services to more than 1,500 developmentally disabled infants, children and adults from throughout the state.

Participants enjoyed a scenic run or walk through the park on a course that is USA Track & Field-certified and sanctioned. The top finishers were Cliff Gerber of East Brunswick (17 minutes, 30 seconds) and Chloe Goldstein of Warren (20:33). Both received prizes.

"The course is scenic, varied and moderately challenging, giving all runners, both new and experienced, a great chance to show what they are capable of," Gerber said.

The Lakeview 5K has raised a total of $250,000 for many of the charity's programs, including Lakeview School.

Members of the Watchung Hills Regional High School ACTION TEAM raised more than $4,000 to support the Lakeview 5K. Created by the Major League Baseball Players Trust, the Action Team National Youth Program recruits and trains high school students to become volunteers in their communities.

Gina Cafaro, also of East Brunswick, is among the Lakeview School parents who expressed appreciation.

"Three years ago, we were blessed to find out about this remarkable school for children with disabilities similar to our son's," Cafaro said. "Lakeview School's outstanding accommodations and compassionate staff come together to create exceptional programming. In the brief time that he has attended, his development has accelerated beyond our expectations. Our Lakeview family has really showed us the true meaning of an amazing support system."

The 500-plus participants received a commemorative T-shirt. Clowns, entertainment and raffles were among the highlights.

The event also featured a "Stroll and Roll," in which participants can set their own pace and distance around Roosevelt Lake.
