NEW BRUNSWICK - Opening statements in the trial of a former South Amboy mother accused of killing her 5-year-old son 24 years ago could begin early next week.

Jury selection in the Michelle Lodzinski trial is expected to continue Tuesday and Wednesday. Opening statements are currently scheduled for Thursday, according to Lodzinski's attorney, Gerald Krovatin.

Lodzinski has maintained that her son, Timothy Wiltsey, disappeared from a Sayreville carnival they attended on May 25, 1991.

The kindergarten student's disappearance sparked a nationwide search. Timothy's partial remains were found in April 1992 in Raritan Center, an industrial complex in Edison where Lodzinski once worked.

Law-enforcement officials have long considered Lodzinski, 48, a suspect in her son's disappearance and death. For more than 20 years, however, no charges were filed in the case.

Lodzinski was arrested in August 2014 after a grand jury indicted her on a first-degree murder charge.

Her attorney has entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf.

The death of Timothy Wiltsey is one of Middlesex County's longest unsolved murder cases.
