SOUTH BRUNSWICK - A tractor-trailer driver with a pile of snow on top of the rig was stopped by police here Thursday, and forced to remove it.

The driver, from North Bergen, also received three tickets, police said.

Police posted a photo of the snow topped truck near the New Jersey Turnpike on Twitter Thursday with the caption "NO it is not okay to drive your truck with that much snow on it."

Police said the truck driver hit a traffic light with the snow just before he was stopped by police.

Police also posted a photo on Twitter of two people shoveling snow off the top of the truck.

South Brunswick police on Tuesday sent out notices on both Twitter and Nixle, a community notification system, reminding people that snow needs to be removed from sidewalks and vehicles.

The township ordinance requires sidewalks be cleared of snow and ice within 12 hours after the first day break of the snow stopping. Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to $2,000.

The notice also referenced a state law requiring motorists to remove all ice and snow from vehicles before driving, especially from the hood, windows and roof. Motorists who fail to comply face fines of $25 to $75 for each offense. If flying ice or snow causes property damage or injury, motorists can face fines of $200 to $1,000 for each offense, the notice states.
