LETTER: Christie can lead fight against domestic violence

AsburyPark

I applaud Gov. Chris Christie's recent attention to the issue of domestic violence. Recently, he signed an order proposing an expedited permit process for residents living under a serious threat. He can further ensure the safety of families under threat of domestic violence, by signing A4218/S2786. This requires that abusers turn in their guns once they become legally unable to have them. Currently, after convicted of domestic violence or are under domestic violence restraining orders, people cannot purchase firearms, but aren't required to surrender guns they already own. This bill closes that loophole.

A4218/S2786 recently passed with bipartisan support. Eighty-two percent of New Jersey voters support the policy, including 78 percent of gun owners and 60 percent of Republicans, proving that protecting people is not about politics, but public safety and should be treated as such.

Christie would be following the leads of other Republican governors like Robert Bentley (Alabama), Bobby Jindal (Louisiana), Brian Sandoval (Nevada), Nikki Haley (South Carolina) and Scott Walker (Wisconsin), who all signed laws keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.

New Jerseyans and the 70,000 members of the N.J. Chapter of Moms Demand Action are pleased Christie is interested in reducing domestic violence. Truly representing the will of the people includes signing this bill. Change cannot solely happen by arming victims. Action needs to be taken to keep guns out of the hands of perpetrators also. By signing the bill on his desk, Christie will truly be a leader in protecting the people of New Jersey.
