GMCT

Favorite: South Plainfield freshman Joe Heilmann is undefeated in the conference with an 18-4 overall record. He is the younger brother of former South Plainfield star Troy, a current University of North Carolina standout, and Nick, who also starred for the Tar Heels. Heilmann owns a 4-3 decision over East Brunswick's Mitchell Polito. Two of his losses are to undefeated wrestlers (Howell's Joey Slendorn and West Morris Central's Shane Metzler). He also dropped a 3-1 decision to Caldwell's Gerald Jones, who is 16-1, and a 2-1 decision to Colonia Forge's Levi Englman, who is 23-4.

113 POUNDS

Favorite: East Brunswick sophomore Mark Schleifer, whose older brother Jonathan, a 2014 NJSIAA Individual Tournament champion is now wrestling at Princeton, owns a 15-1 record. Schleifer's lone defeat was a 3-1 decision to Edison's Robert Cleary, last year's 106-pound GMCT champion who will be competing this year at 120 pounds. Schleifer owns an impressive 6-5 decision over reigning Somerset County Tournament 113-pound champion Brian Kuhlman of Manville, who he defeated at the Bear Invitational. Schleifer has twice defeated Perth Amboy's Norberto Torres (1-0 and 3-1) and owns a 5-3 decision over South Plainfield's Jake Giordano.

Top contenders: Jake Giordano (South Plainfield, 11-9), Norberto Torres (Perth Amboy, 16-4), Mohammad Dhillo (Carteret, 19-4), Dylan O'Connor (Bishop Ahr, 17-6).

Rest of the field: Azam Naqvi (Colonia, 7-6), Julian Burke (Edison, 4-11), Jeffery Reyes (Highland Park, 7-10), Dan Defillippo (J.P. Stevens, 7-10), Adem Djonovic (J.F. Kennedy, 4-4), Michael Naverez (Metuchen, 3-5), Charles Zaccardi (Middlesex, 7-10), Ryan Craver (Monroe, 4-2), Dylan Ur (Old Bridge, 9-8), Erick Valentin (Piscataway, 5-5), Frank Roman (Sayreville, 14-5), Roger Sheffmaker (South Brunswick, 9-10), Justin Thompson (Spotswood, 1-12), Alec Shea (Woodbridge, 12-4).

Top GMCT returner to weight class: Dhillo placed eighth last season.

Notes: An injury will keep Monroe's Nicky Lombard, a third-place finisher at 106 pounds last year who may have been regarded as this year's 113-pound favorite, out of the tournament. Schleifer placed fourth at 106 pounds last season. Giordano decisioned Torres 6-4 at the Morris Knolls Invitational. Giordano is the most battled-tested wrestler in the field, but Torres is also capable of winning the bracket. Dhillo decisioned O'Connor 3-1 in sudden victory.

120 POUNDS

Favorite: Reigning Hunterdon Central Invitational and Matawan Icebreaker Tournament champion Stephen Nadera of Old Bridge owns a 20-0 record. He scored a 9-3 decision over East Brunswick's Alex Gleason, a 5-3 decision over Monroe's Shawn Gardini, a 3-1 decision over Edison's Robert Cleary and pinned Woodbridge's Jack Quinn. Nadera has benefited from the presence of assistant coach Dave Kiley in the room and is among the state's most improved wrestlers.

Top contenders: Robert Cleary (Edison, 15-4), Alec Gleason (East Brunswick, 14-2), Ryan Duhamel (South Plainfield, 8-10), Shawn Gardini (Monroe, 13-8).

Others to watch: Luke Pero (Colonia, 17-3), Jack Quinn (Woodbridge, 16-5), Enrique Cuevas (New Brunswick, 15-4), Victor Torress (J.F. Kennedy, 11-6).

Rest of the field: Andrew Rich (Bishop Ahr, 5-13), Ethan Doda (Carteret, 0-20), Kumayl Qureshi (Highland Park, 3-9), Jamari Lake (J.P. Stevens, 6-9), Chris Little (Metuchen, 6-5), Carlos Lopez (Middlesex, 1-6), Mario Castellanos (North Brunswick, 12-7), Pedro Vera (Perth Amboy, 6-13), Aron Wright (Piscataway, 4-3), Dylan Taillefer (Sayreville, 8-10), Neel Patel (South Brunswick, 0-1), Mark Pacheco (South River, 9-11), Michael Egan (Spotswood, 4-15).

Top GMCT returner to weight class: Gardini placed seventh last season.

Notes: A .500 wrestler a year ago, Gleason is among the league's most improved. Cleary won the GMCT and District 19 titles at 106 pounds last year and is capable of reversing his regular-season loss to Nadera. Nadera was third at 126 pounds in the GMCT last year. Duhamel placed fifth at 113 pounds in the GMCT last year and is dangerous. Quinn placed fifth in the GMCT at 106 pounds last year. Quinn dropped a 3-1 decision to Pero over the weekend. Pero's only losses until last weekend, when he got pinned by Torres, are out of conference. He is the younger brother of Colonia standout Sam Pero.

126 POUNDS

Favorite: South Plainfield senior Ryan Walsh was a GMCT runner-up and District 12 champion at 120 pounds last year. Owner of an 18-3 record, all of Walsh's losses are out of conference. He went 3-1 at the Virginia Duals. Walsh decisioned South Brunswick's Joe Mastro 3-1, decisioned Edison's Peter Tomasino 4-0 and pinned Monroe's Joey Zargo.

Top contenders: Tyler Burgess (South River, 17-1), Dylan Haltli (Sayreville, 16-3), Joe Mastro (South Brunswick, 13-7), Joey Zargo (Monroe, 12-9), Joey Marty (Woodbridge, 19-3), Peter Tomasino (Edison, 16-6).

Others to watch: Sam Guerrero (Highland Park, Sr., 19-2), Jeff Johnson (Middlesex, 18-2), Nick DelDuca (Bishop Ahr, 13-11).

Rest of the field: Angel Pitts (Carteret, 1-14), Nick Coppa (Colonia, 11-8), Tyler Shwartz (East Brunswick, 13-4), Tyler Troung (J.P. Stevens, 10-12), Chris Kwok (Metuchen, 8-9), Yoscar Diaz (New Brunswick, 16-7), Lane Ackerman (North Brunswick, 4-13), Luigi Luppino (Old Bridge, 4-10), Leo Gomero (Piscataway, 2-6), Shea Obado (Spotswood, 8-9).

Top GMCT returner to weight class: Guerrero placed fifth last season.

Notes: After Walsh, this weight class will be a nightmare to seed. For example: Burgess, beat Haltli, who beat Mastro, who beat Zargo, who beat Haltli but who lost to Marty and Tomasino. Mastro competed at 132 last year. Zargo was third in the GMCT at 113 pounds last year. Marty was a District 19 runner-up at 120 pounds last year. Haltli placed seventh in the GMCT at 113 pounds last season. Burgess recorded his 100th career win on Jan. 20. He was third at 120 pounds in the GMCT a year ago. Johnson's 4-3 decision over Guerrero will help him earn a higher seed. DelDuca is dangerous despite his .near 500 record. This may prove to be one of the deepest and most entertaining weight classes of the tournament.

132 POUNDS

Favorite: Monroe's Sal Profaci, who committed to the University of Michigan during the offseason, is wrestling on a completely different level than the rest of the field and may prove to be the best 132-pounder in the state. Owner of a 22-0 record, Profaci has pinned four conference foes and the only league member to nearly go the distance with him is South Brunswick's Nick Daza, who lost by technical fall with one second remaining. Profaci pinned South Plainfield's Kyle Bythell in the first period.

Top contenders: Kyle Bythell (South Plainfield, 17-3), Bob Dinger (Middlesex, 17-3), Nick Daza (South Brunswick, 12-8).

Others to watch: Dylan Alves (Sayreville, 12-7), Ryan Naiduk (Edison, 8-10), Tyler Earl (Bishop Ahr, 9-13), Keion Cherry (Colonia, 15-4), Jose Ruiz (Highland Park), Arcelio Aponte (Piscataway, 7-9), Jason Minikel (East Brunswick, 10-4), Nezzar Dimes (Old Bridge, 9-8).

Rest of the field: Ishmael Pitts (Carteret, 6-16), Jose Ruiz (Highland Park, 19-5), Sooraz Bylipudi (J.P. Stevens, 3-12), P.J. Pascalli (J.F. Kennedy, 5-4), Tom Annarumma (Metuchen, 4-14), Cristian Pinto (New Brunswick, 9-9), John Ramos (South River, 11-9), Ryan Donovan (Spotswood, 0-7), Hunter Kiraly (Woodbridge, 5-7).

Top GMCT returner to weight class: Dinger placed third last season.

Notes: With Profaci the overwhelming favorite, seeding will be paramount. Those with criteria may have an advantage over Bythell, who otherwise is more than capable of reaching the final. Bythell scored a 6-2 decision over Montville's Michael Glaser, who lost 8-7 in an UTB to Dinger. Daza placed eighth in the GMCT at 106 pounds last season. Earl, last winter's Cinderella story, was seventh in the GMCT at 152 pounds a year ago. Tremendous parity exists among others to watch.

138 POUNDS

Favorite: Owner of a 16-5 record, all of South Plainfield junior Dan Hedden's losses are out of conference. His losses are by a total of 12 points including two defeats in sudden victory. Hedden lost last year's 126-pound GMCT final to Monroe's Sal Profaci. Hedden hasn't wrestled since Jan. 17 because his last three opponents forfeited. Hedden did not face Chris Muce in South Plainfield's dual against Monroe.

Top contenders: Chris Muce (Monroe, 18-2), John Sheedy (Bishop Ahr, 21-2).

Others to watch: Brandon Pacheco (South River, 13-5), Stiven Skenderi (J.F. Kennedy, 16-3), Chris Dessino (Middlesex, 11-7), Joey Montuoro (Edison, 11-8), James Halladay (Carteret, 10-12), Brian DiBartolo (South Brunswick, 5-2), T.J. Angstadt (Old Bridge, 15-6), Maddux Mason (Sayreville, 11-5).

Rest of the field: Lenny Gigantino (Colonia, 0-5), Paul Pichirallo (East Brunswick, 11-5), Ish Zabrairu (Highland Park, 4-10), Matt Jasinski (J.P. Stevens, 5-9), Ben Pincus (Metuchen, 4-8), Kelvin Peralta (New Brunswick, 8-10), Cullen McArdle (North Brunswick, 9-11). Brandon Grover (Spotswood, 5-14), Sean Smith (Woodbridge, 2-5).

Top GMCT returner to weight class: No returning medal winners.

Notes: Muce won the 132-pound GMCT title last season and poses the biggest challenge to Hedden. However, Sheedy, who was fourth In the GMCT at 120 pounds last season, should not be discounted. Montuoro was seventh in the GMCT at 145 pounds a year ago. Angstadt defeated him 4-3 in a dual last week.

152 POUNDS

Favorite: Woodbridge's Bryan McLaughlin takes a 22-0 record into the tournament and is the clear-cut favorite. He placed third in the GMCT and second in District 19 a year ago at 138 pounds. The Barrons' flagship wrestler, McLaughlin has competed at 160 and 170 pounds all season. He will be competing at 152 pounds for the first time on Friday. McLaughlin has pinned 13 opponents including the last five.

Top contenders: Eric Nolan (Edison, 17-3), Tyler Underwood (Bishop Ahr, 17-4), Kevin Coleman (Metuchen, 14-4), Xavier Jenkins (Old Bridge, 19-3).

Others to watch: Wilfredo Silva (New Brunswick, 12-8), Christopher Maszczak (South Plainfield, 8-12), Chris Bruce (Spotswood, 12-5), Mike Yeboah (Piscataway, 9-5), Kenny Abode (North Brunswick, 9-4), Quinn Ciesielski (South River, 15-6).

Rest of the field: Alex Ortiz (Carteret, 6-8), Zach Farawell (Colonia, 8-11), Aditiya Pallia (East Brunswick, 4-10), Vraj Patel (J.P. Stevens, 3-20), Jerry Mott (J.F. Kennedy, 5-9), Bryan Velasquez (Middlesex, 3-13), Jared Parisen (Monroe, 6-13), Dylan Kelleher (Sayreville, 6-6), Adisesh Yeragudi (South Brunswick, 8-6).

Top GMCT returner to weight class: Nolan placed sixth last season.

Notes: Coleman finished fourth in the GMCT at 126 pounds last season. Underwood was fourth at 145 pounds in the GMCT a year ago. Abode makes our list of others to watch by virtue of his upset of Coleman in the Buc Classic (Coleman reversed that 7-6 loss with a technical fall during a regular-season dual). This may not be the deepest weight class of the tournament, but there is a great deal of parity regarding who will meet McLaughlin in the final.

160 POUNDS

Favorite: Carteret's Elias Vega owns a 19-1 record. Vega's lone defeat was a 5-3 decision in sudden victory to Woodbridge's Bryan McLaughlin, who is the prohibitive favorite to win the 152-pound weight class after reaching his descent plan.

Top contenders: Jordan Handwerger (South Plainfield, 10-1), Tyler Schwarz (South Brunswick, 18-3), Mike Petite (Piscataway, 13-2)

Others to watch: Algenis Nunez (New Brunswick, 15-7), Russell Rivella (Edison, 13-8), Marquan Payne (Woodbridge, 12-4), Jair Pittman (J.P. Stevens, 15-6)

Rest of the field: Rene Peterson (Bishop Ahr, 1-3), Abdal Abrahim (Colonia, 5-14), Matt Miskanic (East Brunswick, 4-8), Sean Aston (J.F. Kennedy, 10-7), Derek Shapiro (Metuchen, 2-11), Jefferson Galeano (Middlesex, 4-13), Chris Turchio (Monroe, 5-14), John Mueller (North Brunswick, 10-7), Akuamoah Fosuhene (Old Bridge, 7-9), Joe Schenck (Perth Amboy, 4-5), Kyle Wavero (Sayreville, 6-9), Aldo Posas (South River, 9-11), Richard Melvin (Spotswood, 13-7).

Top GMCT returner to weight class: Vega placed third with a 5-4 decision over Handwerger in the consolation final last season.

Notes: Handwerger, who injured his hand just before the Virginia Duals and has been sidelined since, returns in time for the conference tournament. Schwarz and Petite did not get the opportunity to wrestle Handwerger in regular-season duals.

170 POUNDS

Favorite: Brandon Farrell of J.F. Kennedy, who boasts a 15-1 mark, is the defending conference tournament champion at 170 pounds. His only defeat was to Daniel Kilroy of Wayne Hills, who also sports a 15-1 record.

Top contenders: Anthony Tomayo (East Brunswick, 14-3), Nick DiFrancesco (South Plainfield, 8-12), Mike Yuhas (Old Bridge, 5-4), Kevin Creech (Monroe, 11-8).

Others to watch: Alexi Rissiotis (South Brunswick, 13-8), Edwin Aguilera (New Brunswick, 14-6), Zach Cottrell (Woodbridge, 13-5).

Rest of the field: Devin Michael (Bishop Ahr, 11-10), Demetrius Ruiz (Carteret, 8-13), Alex Robinson (Edison, 9-10), Jeff Mathis (Highland Park, 1-1), Sam Marshall (J.P. Top GMCT returner to weight class: Farrell is the defending champion, while Creech placed fifth.

Notes: Colonia standout Sam Pero will miss the tournament with an injury. He owns a 10-0 record. Pero was 15-1 entering last year's conference tournament, during which he endured a season-ending injury. The Patriots hope Pero returns in time for districts. Yuhas, who has wrestled up in class all season, has upset potential, as does Aguilera. Cottrell returned last week from an injury, which caused him to miss four duals. DiFrancesco has a deceptive record, the result of wrestling top state and national competition.

182 POUNDS

Favorite: Old Bridge's Mike Gargano, the defending GMCT 182-pound champion, owns an 18-1 record. His only loss was a 2-1 decision to Cinnaminson's Zack Sireci. Sireci owns a 19-2 record including a 9-4 loss to Spotswood's Ejike Okafor in the Nottingham Tournament. Okafor and Piscataway's Eti-ini Udott, who dropped a 4-2 decision to Gargano, are the biggest threat to the defending champ.

Top contenders: Eti-Ini Udott (Piscataway, 13-2), Christian Gonzalez (South Plainfield, 14-4), Ejike Okafor (Spotswood, 21-1).

Others to watch: Andrew Brazicki (Bishop Ahr, 15-4), Kevin Ambicki (Middlesex, 15-5), Chris Cuevas (Edison, 11-9), Frankelly Rosario (New Brunswick, 17-8).

Rest of the field: Frank Coghan (Carteret, 14-10), Joe Wolfe (Colonia, 7-11), Raph Piscassio (East Brunswick, 3-7), , Anthony Siekle (J.F. Kennedy, 4-5), Clint Hetzell (Monroe, 1-0), James Duffy (North Brunswick, 15-5), Emelvis Batista (Perth Amboy, 1-7), Tyler Gilligan (Sayreville, 12-6), Hunter Delfa (South Brunswick, 2-2), Sidney Pierre (Woodbridge, 6-13)

Top GMCT returner to weight class: Gargano is the defending champion, while Udott placed third and Ambicki placed fifth at this weight a year ago.

Notes: This weight class is loaded with returning GMCT place-winners. Okafor finished fourth at 152 and Brazicki placed sixth at 160. Gonzalez will be seeded ahead of Udott, who was disqualified in their regular-season meeting. Okafor recently pinned reigning 195-pound GMCT champion Doug Ryan in Spotswood's stunning upset of South River, which could cost the Rams the Blue Division title for the third time in the past four years due to a narrow division loss. Monroe's Kaylon Bradley, who pinned Cuevas earlier this year, will miss the tournament with an injury.

195 POUNDS

Favorite: South River senior Doug Ryan (12-1, whose broken leg required the surgical insertion of a metal rod, missed the opening weeks of the season and is still trying to regain his peak wrestling form. Spotswood's Ejike Okafor – a top contender for the GMCT crown at 182 pounds – pinned Ryan in a recent dual meet for his only loss. Ryan defeated Monroe's Pat Dressel to win the GCMT championship a year ago. The two could meet again but Middlesex's Matt Hode and Carteret's Farhan Khan may interfere with their plans for a rematch.

Top contenders: Pat Dressel (Monroe, 12-1), Matt Hode (Middlesex, 17-3), Farhan Khan (Carteret, 20-1), Vlad Torres (Edison, 15-6), Dan Makagon (Old Bridge, 15-5), Max Rhoden (South Brunswick, 15-5).

Others to watch: Anthony Maloney (Metuchen, 14-3), Carlos Martinez (J.F. Kennedy, 15-6),

Rest of the field: Matt Spielman (Bishop Ahr, 4-13), Christian Irizarry (Colonia, 1-14), Damien Ruiz (East Brunswick, 6-6), Dylan Boynton (Highland Park, 6-11), Paul Kim (J.P. Top GMCT returner to weight class: Ryan is the defending champion, Dressel placed second, Hode finished fifth and Torres placed seventh.

Notes: In addition to being loaded with returning medal winners in this weight class, Khan placed sixth at 170 pounds in last year's GMCT. This could prove to be the most balanced and exciting weight class in the entire tournament. It is easily the most difficult to predict.

285 POUNDS

Favorite: Sayreville's Anthony Porcaro is the defending heavyweight champion. He owns a 16-1 record. Porcaro's only loss was a 3-2 decision to undefeated Jonathan Beltre of Union City in the Union City Tournament. Edison's Keith Serio came closest among GMC wrestlers to defeating Porcaro, dropping a 4-3 decision.

Top contenders: Keith Serio (Edison, 15-3), Kevin Eid (East Brunswick, 13-3), Christian Manzanares (Old Bridge, 13-6), Dean Elmenayer (South Brunswick, 15-5), Nick Fromhold (Monroe, 16-5), 285 Edson Flores (Middlesex, 16-3), Rich Leogrande (South River, 13-2)

Others to watch: Alex LaGrippo (Woodbridge, 15-6), Cristian Cardosa (J.F. Kennedy, 12-8), Jeremiah McNear (Perth Amboy, 8-8).

Rest of the field: Abdul Hasnat (Colonia, 2-11), Michael Santana (J.P. Stevens, 9-16), Joel Gil (Metuchen, 2-1), Ramiro Osuna Jr. (New Brunswick, 4-6), Anthony Tacinelli (North Brunswick, 13-8), Kyle Mitchell (Piscataway, 3-2), Matt Szeman (South Plainfield, 8-10), Neftali Aguirre (Spotswood, 2-4).

Top GMCT returner to weight class: Porcaro is the defending champion, Serio placed third, Eid finished fourth, Fromhold placed fifth and Flores finished eighth.

Notes: As the intraconference results suggest, with the exception of Porcaro, the road to the final will be difficult with so much parity among the league's heavyweights.
