ATLANTIC CITY - Bound Brook sophomore 145-pounder Stephan Glasgow had an opponent and friend to beat Friday night at the NJSIAA State Championships at Boardwalk Hall.

After Watchung Hills senior Alex Murray beat West Morris' David Migliaccio in a preliminary bout his next opponent was Glasgow, who is friends with Murray who he has often drilled with.

Glasgow beat Murray 6-5 to advance to this afternoon's quarterfinals against Ryan Burkert of St. Peter Prep. Murray, who was close to earning a medal last year at 138, will meet North Hunterdon's Derek Ciavarro in the first round of wrestle backs.

"It was weird, it was strange and it's horrible to wrestle a friend,'' said Glasgow.

Glasgow, making his first appearance in the state tournament, built a 4-1 lead, then led 6-2 before Murray escaped and scored a late takedown.

"I made a few mistakes, I need to ride better,'' said Glasgow.

Glasgow will certainly need that talent tomorrow when he faces St. Peter Prep senior Ryan Burkert. Burkert beat Glasgow 2-1 in an ultimate tiebreaker in a dual meet earlier this season.

Wrestleback bouts

Among the interesting matchups in the first round of wrestlebacks is matchup between New Providence's Tyler Gazaway and South Plainfield's Dan Hedden at 138. Gazaway is 3-0 against Hedden, beating the Tigers' junior in the last two District 12 tournament finals, and in a Region III semifinal last year. At 182, Plainfield senior 182-pounder Rohan Philip will see Cranford junior Nico Cappello again in a wrestleback. Cappello beat Philip for the Region III title last week, and in in the Union County Tournament final in January.
