Montgomery takes team title at Bear Invitational
Terrence Rohmeyer (120) and Alex Doty (182) highlighted a balanced lineup, claiming individual titles while leading Montgomery to the team title of Monday’s Bear Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Churchill Junior High School.
The Cougars finished with 180 points, narrowly edging second-place Lacy by a single point.
Montgomery advanced a tournament-best five wrestlers to the finals.
“I think it was a team effort,” Montgomery coach Kurt Franey said. “We are much more balanced this year.”
The program’s flagship wrestler a year ago was undefeated state champion Anthony Cassar.
Rohmeyer scored a 4-3 decision over West Windsor-Plainsboro South’s Sean Thompson in the 120-pound final, while Doty majored New Brunswick’s Edwin Aguilera 11-3 in the 182-pound final.
Manville finished fourth in the 16-team tournament with 150 points, while Bernards placed 11th.
Montgomery’s Jacob Bobal (170), Nico Ipeker (220) and Dylan D’Amore (285) also reached the finals.
Bobal, who missed all of last season with a football injury, was seeded 10th. D’Amore, a sophomore who has wrestled for just four weeks, is 6-2 on the year.
