Bridgewater-Raritan wins Garden State Classic

Piscataway’s Eti-ini Udott won a 182-pound title and three Bridgewater-Raritan wrestlers were crowned champions to help the Panthers edge Cherry Hill West for the title of Saturday’s Garden State Classic.

Kyle Adams (132), Van Miller (160) and Kyle Murphy (170) all won individual championships for the Panthers, who finished with 124.5 team points. Cherry Hill West totaled 116.5.

North Plainfield’s Charles Thomas was crowned the heavyweight champion.

Udott, who finished fourth in Region 5 with a one-point loss in the consolation final, defeated a state qualifier in the semifinals and won by injury default over two-time state placewinner Zach Hertling of Ocean in the final.

“He had a good tournament,” Piscataway coach Bill Pavlak said of Udott, who starred on the Piscataway football team. “He was a starting fullback. That helped with his conditioning. You could see he is in better condition.”

Udott also wrestled for the first time in his career over the summer, putting in about 25 matches.

“You could see he is focused and wants to really go as far as he can. You can see technically he is more sound.”

Udott trailed Hertling 6-4 with 1:34 left in the second period when the Ocean standout exhausted all of his injury time.

Pavlak said Bridgewater-Raritan impressed at the tournament.

“They’ve got about six or seven real good quality wrestlers. (Coach) Greg Evans does a great job getting them ready. They are going to be a dangerous tournament team.”
